    There was a move by ESA to restrict cables used in ductless mini-split air conditioners to UL-approved PLTC and TC-ER-JP cables certified under UL standard 1277. After much discussion with Electro Federation Canada and its manufacturing members, it proposed that we could come up with a Canadian CSA-approved cable for this, and they came up with the following solution.

    "In addition to the cables and wiring methods permitted by Section 12 for interconnection of units in ductless mini-split air conditioners (if suitable for termination), TC-ER cables (certified to CSA standard C22.22 No.230) will be permitted to be used as long as they are installed as per applicable rules for non-metallic sheathed cables. Although Code permits TC-ER cables for transition between cable trays and utilization equipment or devices, ESA will permit this cable for interconnection between mini split ac units since TC-ER cables comply with the crush and impact requirements of armoured (or metal clad) cables. Based on Rule 10-602 1), similar to armoured cables, TC-ER cables will be permitted to be installed on a building while being continuously supported. Typical installation of mini-split units does not require pulling a cable through the structural members, therefore TC-ER cable type (without “JP” marking that indicates pull-test) will be permitted.

    This is our decision:

    Notwithstanding Rules 12-100 and 12-2202 3), TC-ER cable (certified to CSA standard C22.22 No.230) shall be permitted to be used for interconnection of units in ductless mini-split air conditioners installations provided that it is installed:
    • As per Rules 12-508, 12-512, 12-518 and 12-520;
    • Continuously supported; and
    • Not pulled through joists (structural members).
    In addition:

    ESA acceptance of cables for interconnection of units in ductless mini-split air conditioners certified to UL standard, UL1277, will expire on June 2021. This applies to following cables:
    • TC-ER-JP, and
    • AWM cable Type PLTC
    The permission of accepting TC-ER-JP and AWM cable Type PLTC certified to UL standard, UL1277, will expire on June 2021. TC-ER cables (certified to CSA standard C22.22 No.230) and other cables and wiring methods permitted by Section 12 represent adequate alternatives. UL standard for tray cables, UL1277, is not harmonized with CSA standard, C22.2 No.230."

    As of June 1st, cables used for these applications will need to be CSA-certified cables marked TC-ER.

    Electro Cables Inc. has been involved in this decision from the beginning, as we have been supplying cables for these applications for several years now. Through our partnership with Cerco Cables and Carrier Canada, we have a cable that meets these new requirements and are currently in full production to ensure these cables will be available for the June 2021 deadline. These cables may pre-purchased at any Carrier Canada site (see locations for your nearest supplier).
