Electrical Hazards and Stray Current Damage from Welding Activities
By Jim Galloway, Professor of Welding Engineering Technology at Conestoga College
Arc welding activities have taken place (or are actively occurring) in virtually every industrial facility, construction site and equipment shed in the province. The electrical hazards from these operations both from direct electric shock from the secondary (output) side of welding machine and the potential for significant damage to the electrical network from high levels of stray current are too often underestimated. In Ontario, there has recently been a cluster of electrical injuries and deaths related to welding, including as the result of stray current damage to the supply network. This presentation will explain these hazards, what to look for in the electrical system and what can be done to improve this situation
