Do you have what it takes? That was the questions IDEAL Industries Canada asked, these students responded, “Absolutely!”
When looking for job opportunities, we’re all fighting to be noticed! So when the opportunity to showcase what you’re made of in front of potential employers comes knocking – you show up, and you show up ready!
That opportunity came in the form of the IDEAL Skills Challenge Canada, hosted on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at OEL’s Greater Toronto Area West Chapter meeting.
“I was amazed at the energy and workmanship of each young participant,” says Art Clabby, contest host and area sales manager for Ideal Industries Canada. “You could see their confidence rise after realizing they had what it takes to complete this challenge, which is important when speaking to employers about their abilities.”
Attendees had a chance to show off their electrical know-how by completing the Ideal Skills Challenge, which is a competition that brings together Canadian professional electricians, apprentices, and electrical students to find the fastest and most skilled electricians in Canada!
More than that, students got a chance to network with potential employers and ask questions, in a conversational and intimate environment.
“It’s a catch 22 world we live in, where every employer is looking for good, skilled workers, and every employee is looking for a good employer to work for and learn from,” says Huong Nguyen, OEL’s manager of communications and marketing. “I understand that there’s still value in face-to-face interactions. That’s why these meetings are so important. This one particularly, because it helps bridge the distance between the two parties that need to find one another.”
The students that had the foresight to clear their schedule and attend meetings, this one in particular are the ones that differentiate themselves from the stacks of resumes on an employer’s desk.

In 2018, IDEAL Canada will be participating in the IDEAL National Championship, holding pre-qualifying events across the country to find the fastest and most skilled competitors in the industry. The top Canadian professional electricians and apprentices (from east and west regions) will move on to the Championship Weekend in Orlando, where they will compete against their American peers for the chance to win huge prizes, and the coveted title of IDEAL National Champion! Pre-qualifying events will be held from March to October, 2018.
